Community Center Blends With Surroundings With Help Of CENTRIA Products

The $30-million Kroc Community Center in Dayton, OH is designed to provide recreational, spiritual, educational and cultural arts programs to people of all ages in an underserved community. A two year construction plan included 100,000 square feet comprised of three new buildings: one for arts and worship, one for recreation and education, as well as the renovation of a 160-year-old historic residence, Duncarrick, which became meeting and office space. CENTRIA products played a significant role in the facility’s design.

Located on 17 acres in the heart of historic Old North Dayton, the architects made sure that, while preserving the historic feel of the community, modern touches were incorporated to blend in with the rest of the city. The buildings include high-end touches such as custom exterior finishes of stucco, terra cotta, brick and cast stone. Wood beams and planking, metal walls and roof panels, and expansive glass curtainwall systems also added a touch of elegance to each of the buildings on the campus. Key features include a 75-foot-high steel tower on the arts and worship center, a large outdoor basketball court, state-of-the-art tech café, a library and a variety of multi-use classrooms.

The goal of the Kroc Community Center was to design a facility that would emphasize the historic significance of the Duncarrick, while also promoting the modern mission of the Salvation Army. Metal walls and roof panels were a perfect way to integrate a modern and sophisticated look with the wood, glass and brick of the old existing structure.

CENTRIA’s Profile Series IW Concealed Fasteners have no exposed fasteners and provide a clean, unbroken aesthetic with an embossed finish. The panels also feature a common lock-joint design for interesting visual effects and are an excellent option for restoration and new construction projects. With the ability to install the panels year-round, and the option to add insulation, installation time is shortened, permitting fast-track scheduling.

EcoScreen® Perforated Screenwalls provide a translucent effect that controls light and air movement while ensuring safety and security. The unique design elegantly blends industrial applications with the surrounding area.

The architect was John Poe Architects of Dayton, OH; the CENTRIA product dealer/installer was Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. of Wheeling, WV; and the contractor was Davis Building Company of Dayton, OH.
