Located in a beach community south of Santa Cruz, CA, the Zeidler Residence reflects design influences from both Morocco and Japan. Situated on a stunning lot with ocean views, the residence is comprised of two buildings—a main house and guest cottage—aligned to form an interior courtyard with a lap pool and outdoor kitchen.

The home was constructed with a rich and elegant palette of materials including burnished concrete block, stainless steel, cast glass, steel-troweled stucco, walnut millwork and zinc wall panels. The zinc panels—covering approximately 2,500 sq. ft. of surface area—were fabricated from Reynobond zinc composite material (ZCM). Reynobond® ZCM is a product of Alcoa Architectural Products, Eastman, GA. The company produced the material using 0.7mm-thick (24-gauge) RHEINZINK® with a Pre-weathered Blue-Gray finish. RHEINZINK zinc is available from RHEINZINK America Inc., Woburn, MA. Handling the panel fabrication and installation was Alumawall Inc. of San Jose, CA.

The home was designed by Steven Ehrlich Architects, Culver City, CA. As reported in Architectural Digest, the structure is both grounded and ethereal, transparent and opaque, with an air of mystery about it. “I like a sense of surprise when you enter a residence,” said Ehrlich. “I think of houses as being about more than frozen sculpture and capturing space. They are about people connecting to people, nature and their own feelings.”
