Michigan State University’s Butterfield Hall was first opened in 1953. It is named for Kenyon Butterfield, an MSU graduate who also served as President of the university between 1924 and 1928. Starting in 2013, the dormitory facility underwent some major improvements including updates to the interior and exterior of the building – highlighted by metal products from CENTRIA.
A new roof was laid on the left wing for better insulation on the fourth floor, and nine additional private rooms were added as well as creating new commons and designated study areas. A goal during construction was to recycle or repurpose any stripped materials, so the brick formerly covering Butterfield Hall’s exterior was salvaged and used to match new layers of brick. The hall, located on Michigan State University’s campus in East Lansing, now has a more modern look that matches the style of neighboring halls.
The architects for Butterfield Hall selected CENTRIA products because of their unique combination of durability, sustainability, aesthetics and economic advantages.
The sleek and innovative aesthetics of CENTRIA’s panels were an integral part of the architect’s vision for the building upgrade, contributing to the modern façade of the building. Concept Series concealed fastener panels provide thousands of combinations of articulation, shadows and sight lines, along with a complete line of design, finish, integration, special systems and detail options. The CS-260 panels contributed to the modern look that the architect desired.
Concerned with selecting high-performance products, the architect specified CENTRIA’s MetalWrap™ insulated backup system, a four-in-one panel, including exterior sheathing, vapor barrier, air barrier and thermal insulation. This system eliminates the need for conventional batt or board insulation, exterior gypsum, air barriers, vapor retarders and building wraps and enables one-step installation by one contractor. The system serves as a high-performance backup wall for nearly any building envelope, including brick, masonry, terra cotta, single-metal and more.
The architect for this project was Progressive AE of Grand Rapids, MI. The CENTRIA products dealer/installer was Architectural Metals Inc. of Portland, MI. The general contractor was DeMaria Building Company of Novi, MI. The project was completed in February 2014.
