Storm Damaged Cabin At Childhood Cancer Camp Repaired After Storm With VICWEST Roofing

The Spring of 2011 will be remembered for severe storms that occurred throughout North America. In April, violent winds swirled throughout southwestern Ontario, pulling down trees and ripping shingles off many asphalt roofs. One of the countless structures damaged that month was the Lions Club-sponsored cabin at the Camp Trillium Childhood Cancer Support Centre. Located in Waterford, Ontario, the camp offers and promotes recreational experiences for children battling cancer and their families.

“At our club meeting we were informed of the damage to the cabin and had an open discussion on which direction to go: asphalt shingles again, or steel,” explained Andy Palmer, a Fisherville, Ontario Lions Club member. With the decision made to use steel for the replacement roof, the organization approached VICWEST for help.

VICWEST responded with an in-kind donation of a new steel roof to replace the damaged shingles and resist any future destruction due to harsh weather. Thirty squares of VICWEST's 29-gauge Ultravic roofing, provided with a factory applied Coca Brown paint finish, were installed by local community volunteers.

The Camp Trillium Childhood Cancer Support Centre offers and promotes recreational experiences to bring children with cancer and their families together. The Trillium Centre provides an environment that normalizes relationships and experiences, helping children and their families in the healing process and enhancing their quality of life.

The camp was founded in 1984 and since that time has experienced phenomenal growth, perhaps due in part to the fact more children than ever are surviving cancer. And though that’s good news, the devastation of the diagnosis and treatment has major implications for the whole family. That’s why the camp welcomes children currently undergoing treatment, those off treatment, brothers and sisters of patients, bereaved siblings and parents.

“On behalf of the Fisherville Lions Club and the Kids at Camp Trillium, we would like to thank VICWEST for the generous donation of a new steel roof on the cabin we sponsor,” said a statement by an appreciative Lions Club spokesman.
