Hospital Grows With The Aid Of Architectural Metal Products From CENTRIA

Cooper University Hospital’s Health Sciences Campus in Camden, NJ, was renovated to accommodate South New Jersey’s growing demand for medical care. Designed with future growth in mind, the hospital’s renovation is the first step in a plan to revitalize the surrounding urban area.

The largest renovation was an addition to the existing facility which featured metal products from CENTRIA. The hospital added an 11-story 37,000-square-foot Patient Care Pavilion. The new pavilion is the home of the hospital laboratory, as well as 12 new (and four renovated) operating rooms, including specialty rooms for cardiology, neurology and orthopedic surgeries. The facility also includes a 30-bed intensive care unit and two 30-bed medical/surgical nursing units, all of which are private.

The facility is designed for future expansion, with120 additional patient rooms to be constructed in a second phase that will also provide additional intensive care, step-down and orthopedic beds. A dedicated orthopedic floor will also provide a rehabilitation gym and a family dining room.

CENTRIA’s Formawall Dimension Series® is the only wall system that provides both advanced thermal efficiency and moisture control in a single panelized component. Compared to traditional multi-component wall construction—typically requiring up to seven separate components, including a rainscreen, an air barrier, exterior gypsum sheathing, fiberglass insulation and a vapor barrier—Formawall Dimension Series is manufactured as one component, making it one of today’s preferred wall systems. Formawall Dimension Series panels were chosen for the unlimited possibilities in terms of form, color and texture, resulting in a fresh, welcoming and modern aesthetic.

Designed to integrate seamlessly with Formawall Dimension Series panels, Formavue FV-200 window system was ideal because it is designed to eliminate the problems involved with coordinating window and metal panel intersections. In addition to contributing to the building’s overall sleek aesthetic, FV-200 offers weather-resistant protection through a standard thermal break. CENTRIA and Construction Specialties, Inc., provide a line of C/S Louvers designed to fully integrate with Formawall Dimension Series panels. A complete line of fixed, drainable and storm resistant louvers, the system allows for simplified installation and framing requirements.

CENTRIA’s Profile Series Econolap ¾”, the versatile and widely used metal panel system, is designed for horizontal and vertical installation. These panels may be used with a variety of non-insulated or insulated back-up systems in a wide range of designs and colors.

CENTRIA’s FormaBond® 8mm Rout & Return composite wall system was chosen for its high-performance, weather-tight construction and design flexibility. The panels offer patented dry joinery which eliminates wet seals and provides optimum venting to allow wall cavities to dry effectively.

Structural Standing Seam Roof Systems (SRS®) provide clean, unbroken lines with minimal use of exposed fasteners, offering continuous transitions. SRS panels utilize a unique concealed clip and panel interlock design that allows for unimpeded thermal movement without damage, while the mechanical seaming of the roof panels in the field ensures weather resistance and enhances appearance.

The project architect was EwingCole of Philadelphia, PA; the CENTRIA products dealer/installer was A.C. Dellovade Inc. of Canonsburg, PA; and contractors were Turner Construction of Philadelphia, PA, and HSC Builders and Construction Managers of Exton, PA. The 297,650 sq. ft. project was complete in March 2011.
