The complete renovation of Fletcher Jones Audi/Volkswagen in Chicago is a striking example of the use of Dri-Design’s new Texture Series panels to provide a uniquely accented design element.
The Texture Series is created by attaching a 2 ¾”-deep perforated corrugated grill to the surface of a traditional Dri-Design rainscreen wall panel. The grill is separated from the panel with a 2” airspace to provide dramatic shadowing and depth. Total system depth is 6” and is delivered to the jobsite factory assembled and ready to install.
Approximately 11,500 sq. ft. of Texture Series .080” and .063” aluminum panels, finished in Clear Anodized, were utilized on the exterior of the Audi portion of the 100,000 sq. ft. Fletcher Jones facility. Approximately 4,000 sq. ft. of traditional Dri-Design panels, finished in White and Gray Velvet, were used in exterior and interior applications on the Volkswagen portion of the dealership.
Architectural design for the multi-story Audi Terminal was provided by CR Studio Architects, New York, NY. Structural engineering for the project was provided by Thornton Tomasetti, Chicago. Gensler, Chicago was the Architect of Record. Located on the near north side of Chicago, the Fletcher Jones building is comprised of three interconnected structures, the oldest of which was constructed in 1928.
“The first floor showroom required the removal of substantial load-bearing walls to achieve the open plan as well as the addition of supplemental steel to support floors,” explained to Angela Harper, Gensler project architect. “The exterior was completely reconstructed and more than 60% of the exterior brick piers were removed. The new envelope using the Dri-Design system provides a unique look.”
Dri-Design panels are 100% recyclable and can be made from a variety of materials including zinc, copper, stainless steel and painted and anodized aluminum. Panels are available in any Kynar color and are sized and detailed to meet the specific requirements of each project. This cost effective system is Dade County and AAMA 508-07 approved.
