Living Hope Church

Extra Design Efforts Result In Quick Assembly Of Church Structure, Featuring Products From Varco Pruden Buildings

Utilizing Rigid Frame and Continuous Beam systems from Varco Pruden Buildings, Living Hope Church in Middletown, PA was completed in May 2017 by Arthur Funk & Sons Inc. Construction Services of Lebanon, PA. The 24,769 sq. ft. church was designed by Cornerstone Design Architects of Lancaster, PA.

Living Hope Church was selected as a winner in the Church category in the 2018 Varco Pruden Hall Of Fame presentation.

The building façade is a combination of metal panels, split face block and EIFS. These materials all had differing thicknesses, requiring extra upfront design time to ensure accuracy. It was noted that the added design time affected the footing and foundation schedule as they could not be placed until the anchor bolt plan was ready; meanwhile, other site activities could be performed while those details were worked out. The builder noted, "This was a good experience, however, for future projects, allowing us to explain to an owner how sometimes the upfront design process can take a little extra time." As a result of the extra design effort, the assembly of the structure went very quickly.

In addition to the framing systems, Varco Pruden Buildings supplied its SSR profile roofing in a Cool Dark Bronze color, along with Cool Granite Gray ThermalClad wall panels.

Inside of the church is a sanctuary, classrooms, fellowship spaces, an easily accessible attic mezzanine space, and an open café with views of the surrounding wooded hillside. The use of steel building framing allowed for open, inviting spaces throughout. Exterior features of the building include a large porte cochere and a cupola that is highly visible from the nearby roadway.

"Previous work in the construction industry played a valuable role in this project," said Kenneth Mellinger of Living Hope Church. "We knew that Varco Pruden was considered a top-notch product so we were very comfortable selecting them. Our church was interested in a relatively simple design because complex buildings can have complex problems after construction is completed. Our building hasn't had any issues and we are thrilled with the energy costs because the savings have exceeded our expectations. Combine these factors with the experience and knowledge of the Funk Construction team, and the sterling reputation they enjoy, and we can say we had a very successful building project and more than that, a beautiful place to gather and worship."
