MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital

CENTRIA Wall Systems Are Prominent Design Element Of Washington Hospital

The leaders of MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital in Puyallup, WA wanted the building’s architecture, operational structure and interior design to reflect their philosophy of putting the patient and family at the center of care. Opened in February 2011, the facility includes a slender nine-story tower that doubles the amount of available space, creating a 357,000 square foot facility situated at the top of a hill with sweeping views of the surrounding mountain ranges.

Covering an area equal to six city blocks, the hospital’s expansion was a highly complex building project. Not only did designers strive to incorporate the natural environment into the project by preserving the existing green space, they contended with a sloping site, multiple overlapping design phases and an ambitious LEED Silver sustainable design goal. Featured prominently in the hospital’s design were architectural metal products from CENTRIA.

The new entrance and central, light-filled hub connects old and new hospital buildings seamlessly. Decentralized technology-supported staff stations keep caregivers close to patients in both inpatient and diagnostic areas. The new facility also includes: four therapeutic garden spaces; a four-story, 380 stall parking structure; and a 12,600 square foot Central Utility Plant housed in a two-level building with a tunnel under the street connecting utilities to the new tower.

Sustainability was an also an important goal of the project. MultiCare Good Samaritan Hospital is the first registered LEED hospital in Washington and is on track to receive LEED Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

CENTRIA’s Formawall® Dimension Series® vertical and horizontal insulated metal wall panels were chosen because of the products’ outstanding performance, aesthetics, sustainability and value. Formawall Dimension Series wall system provides both advanced thermal efficiency and moisture control in a single panelized component. Compared to traditional multi-component wall construction – typically requiring up to seven separate components such as a rainscreen, an air barrier, exterior gypsum sheathing, fiberglass insulation and a vapor barrier – Formawall Dimension Series only requires one component, making it one of today’s preferred wall systems. Formawall Dimension Series panels were also chosen for their unlimited possibilities in terms of form, color and texture, resulting in a fresh, welcoming and modern aesthetic. Formawall Dimension Series DS-60 profiled insulated metal wall panels added an additional dramatic effect to this project.

Formawall® Graphix Series® also contributed to the building’s striking aesthetic. A single large panel built to appear as multiple smaller panels, CENTRIA’s Graphix Series provides virtually unlimited design possibilities, while making segmented construction easy and economical. Graphix Series is also an insulated metal wall panel, and integrates seamlessly with Formawall Dimension Series, making it possible to achieve a unique aesthetic without sacrificing performance.

The project architect was Good Sam Design Collaborative (GSDC), a joint venture between Clark/Kjos Architects and Giffin Bolte Jurgens (GJB), Portland, OR; the CENTRIA products dealer/installer was Crown Corr, Inc. of Washougal, WA; and the general contractor was Skanska Construction of Seattle, WA. The 357,000 sq. ft. project was completed in February 2011.
