NTT Data Center H12

Insulated Metal Wall Panels Keep New Data Center Operating Efficiently

Data centers are increasingly crucial as the world becomes more connected and reliant on digital infrastructure. These facilities are the backbone of industries ranging from healthcare to finance, providing the foundation for innovation and growth. They are also environmentally sensitive, with carefully maintained interior temperatures. For this reason, insulated panel systems like those offered by Kingspan Insulated Panels are popular exterior envelope solutions.

NTT, one of the world’s largest data center providers, has strategically expanded its global network with a new 47-acre campus in Hillsboro, Oregon. The new facility adds to NTT’s portfolio, which spans over 160 data centers across more than 20 countries, addressing the growing demand for secure, scalable, and reliable data storage and processing.

As data needs continue to grow, driven by technologies such as AI, IoT, and cloud computing, businesses and organizations must ensure they have high-performing, energy-efficient environments to store and manage their information. The Hillsboro expansion exemplifies NTT’s commitment to meeting these needs.

To help meet stringent energy efficiency and building code requirements, architects Corgan and CAI Architects Inc. selected Kingspan insulated metal panels (IMPs) for the building envelope of NTT Data Center HI2. Kingspan IMPs offer strong thermal efficiency, with R-values of up to 8.0 per inch, minimizing the need for excessive heating or cooling – a crucial factor for large-scale data center operations. These properties help regulate internal temperatures and reduce energy costs over time.

Kingspan IMPs also provide a strong air and water barrier, offering reliable protection against Oregon’s varied weather, including rain, snow, and high winds. This protection ensures the long-term durability and performance of the facility.

The aesthetic appeal of Kingspan’s IMPs complements the cutting-edge technology inside the data center. Nearly 31,000 square feet of Kingspan KS Micro-Rib panels were used in the construction, applied vertically to create a sleek, ribbed design. The panels provide a modern, professional look while maintaining strong insulation and energy efficiency.

The color finishes, including a custom silver polish and a lighter gray hue, enhanced the facility’s contemporary appearance, aligning with the advanced technology housed within.

In addition to their aesthetic and thermal benefits, Kingspan IMPs are prefabricated, ready-to-install systems, reducing construction time. Only one installer – Streimer Sheet Metal Works, Inc. – was required for the installation, which streamlined the process and kept the project on schedule.

This state-of-the-art facility is now part of NTT’s global data center network, supporting the rapidly growing need for data processing and storage. Kingspan IMPs played a role in ensuring the new data center is energy-efficient and visually appealing, helping NTT continue to meet the increasing demands of the digital age.
