Pearson Court Square

Insulated Metal Wall Panels By Englert Chosen For Urban High-Rise Apartment Building

Though Englert Inc. is well-established in the metal roofing market, they are an up-and-comer on the wall panel side of the business. That makes it all the more fitting that one of the company's insulated metal panel profiles would be chosen for Pearson Court Square, a 15-story, 170,000 sq. ft. residential apartment building that is located in an area of Long Island City, NY that's considered an up-and-comer too.

Pearson Court Square has 197 living units and offers its residents covered, at-grade parking. The building achieved Silver LEED certification, garnering points for roof and non-roof heat island effect reduction and for rooftop wind turbines powering a roof lounge.

The industrial-style building was developed by L+M Development Partners and designed by SLCE Architects, both of New York, NY, and is located in the heart of a largely commercial and industrial area of Long Island City.  The development is characterized as part of a “microhood,” defined as a city area off the beaten path of well-known walkable neighborhoods, but which may be "up and coming." The building’s studio-to-two-bedroom apartments have individually controlled heating and cooling. Amenities include landscaped terraces on the second and tenth floors, a roof deck, a gym and yoga studio, an outdoor basketball court, bicycle storage (which earned a LEED credit), indoor parking, and on-site rental cars. Some units have private terraces.

A different wall panel profile had originally been specified but the project manager at L&M Development got approval to change it and ultimately chose an Englert IMP 100, two-inch thick, 24” wide panel. The project manager chose the Englert IMP 100 because of its smooth, flat appearance—which is good for high-profile applications like Pearson Court Square—and because it provided the same performance characteristics as more expensive high profile products.  The developer also cited the in-house product solutions staffs at B&B Sheet Metal and Englert for making the choice because of the expertise they brought to the preparation for the installation of the wall system as well as the product pricing and lead time on delivery.

Approximately 15,000 square feet of panels were installed, and 700, 22-gauge flat sheets were used to custom fabricate all the trim details. The project had many challenging aspects, mostly the trim details, which the design and engineering team of the fabricator, B&B Sheet Metal of Long Island City, New York figured out and fabricated. M&N Installations of Brooklyn, New York, applied the complete system.
