Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Terminal 1 Renovation

Airport Terminal Renovation Takes Flight With Architectural Metal Walls From CENTRIA

Since 1938, the Raleigh-Durham (RDU) Airport Authority has played a central role in the growth of the Research Triangle Region. RDU celebrated Terminal 1’s reopening in 2014, following a major modernization project featuring CENTRIA’s metal wall panel products.

This Morrisville, NC project was designed to modernize the aging Terminal 1. It required ripping out the old single skin and adding some new structure before CENTRIA’s products could be added. “We used custom modules for this project that all had to be sequenced and laid out,” said Mike Russo of SPS Corporation, the installer on the project. “The installation took about five months, and the result was a modern, appealing aesthetic.”

CENTRIA’s Formawall Dimension Series reimagines metal by providing thermal efficiency and moisture control in a single panelized component. The total air and moisture control as well as proven, long-term performance made this product a great choice for the often humid North Carolina weather. The insulated panels include factory foamed-in-place cores, which serve to minimize insulation gaps, along with thermal breaks between the faces and liners. The vertical panels chosen for this project can be integrated with wall components and hence allow for an integrated, high performance system.

Versawall’s lightweight, insulated metal composite panels feature concealed fasteners and are designed with double tongue-and-groove joinery. The factory foam-insulated system includes a thermal break between panel face and liner for outstanding thermal performance and energy savings. The panels also provide outstanding weather resistance and can be installed quickly and easily.

“Using CENTRIA’s panels made installation quick and easy, helping us enclose the project at the earliest possible date,” Russo said. “They were also economical - which is what this project needed.”

Environmental Benefits

Formawall Dimension Series is a high-performance insulated metal panel, helping to minimize HVAC costs, and its single-component construction eliminates the need for air barriers, gypsum sheathing, vapor barriers and other parts of a traditional multi-component wall system, which saves material usage. All CENTRIA sheet metal products are 100% recyclable and contain recycled material.

Both CENTRIA’s Formawall Dimension Series and Versawall panels have received Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), certified by UL Environment, an independent safety science company. EPDs offer a comprehensive report that documents the ways in which each product, throughout its lifecycle, impacts the environment.

One of the major advantages of EPDs is their ability to impact LEED® certification. In addition, EPDs can be used by architects and contractors to make more educated purchasing decisions and serve as an excellent product comparison tool for the consumer.

Service And Expertise

CENTRIA’s technically trained sales team has extensive product knowledge and experience consulting with architects and contractors in the construction industry. CENTRIA’s sales team is supported by a dedicated group of in-house engineers, architects and building scientists who are available to assist the build team.

Russo noted that during this project, CENTRIA made all parties’ jobs easier throughout the entire process. “CENTRIA did a great job coordinating with the architect and the window contractor. They worked out all the details, so we didn’t have to worry about it,” he said.

The architect for this project was Pearce, Brinkley, Cease + Lee (Clark Nexsen). The CENTRIA products dealer/installer was SPS Corporation of Apex, NC. The contractor was DH Griffin /Balfour Beatty (Joint Venture) of Greensboro, NC / Dallas, TX. The project measured 166,000 square feet.

CENTRIA products used on this project included:
