Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools Complex

RHEINZINK® Panels Highlight Innovative Educational Complex

The Robert F. Kennedy Community Schools K-12 complex is located on the former site of the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles where Senator Kennedy was assassinated in 1968. The complex consists of a K-5 school, a middle school and a high school—all in the context of a single, virtually seamless campus. The K-5 building is approximately 92,000 square feet and contains 44 classrooms in a two-story structure clad with RHEINZINK®. In playful contrast to the zinc cladding is a material collage of painted plaster and perforated metals in a palette that combines white, charcoal gray, bright orange and yellow-green.

Approximately 95,000 sq. ft. of RHEINZINK was used throughout the multi-building complex including 35,000 sq. ft. RHEINZINK 0.8mm/22 gauge Pre-weathered Blue-Gray Double Lock Standing Seam Panels; 50,000 sq. ft. RHEINZINK 0.8mm/22 gauge Pre-weathered Blue-Gray Angled Standing Seam Panels; and 10,000 sq. ft. RHEINZINK Pre-weathered Blue-Gray Interlocking Tile Soffit.

Gonzales Goodale Architects of Pasadena, CA designed the complex. Following design guidelines, the architects preserved several vestiges of the historic hotel including the large sign on Wilshire Boulevard, the Embassy Ballroom and renovation of the famed Cocoanut Grove to include a 500-seat auditorium.
