North Carolina Residence Blends Sustainability And Luxury With ATAS Roof And Wall Panels

A tranquil house nestled into the lush nature of Hillsborough, North Carolina emulates the intensifying pulse coursing through modern architecture: the blend of sustainability, luxury, and dynamic vision. The architects of The Steeplechase House, Brooks + Scarpa, in the suit of forward-thinking design, sought to weave a luxurious and inviting home into the natural landscape. The location is defined by its temperate climate, situated to experience the beauty of changing seasons while surrounded by woodlands that will bloom, shed, and be weighted by snow. To preserve the integrity of the landscape and craft a home that is aesthetically functional and embraces its place in nature year-round, the project necessitated an elevated design and materials to achieve both its stylish vision and sustainable standards.

Meeting the challenge and contributing to the structure’s façade is ATAS’ Corrugated Panel. Featured on both the walls and roof of the structure is ATAS’ Corrugated Panel in Black, 24-gauge steel, which adds to its sleek design. Steel panels help the structure meet its sustainable goals by being made of recyclable materials and are entirely recyclable at the end of their 40+ year lifespan, with proper maintenance, which can be more reliable and durable than alternative materials. The steel panels provide durability and design flexibility, contributing to the home’s sharp geometry, with the roof panels sloped at a high pitch to integrate the structure into the surrounding trees.

Of the metal exterior, Brooks + Scarpa said, “The simple double gable roofs rise to 31 feet high with expanses of glass that allows nature to visually connect to the interior space and help forge a deeper, more meaningful understanding of the relationship between the natural and built environments.”

ATAS’ Corrugated Panel can be installed vertically, horizontally, and be used in exterior roof and wall, or interior applications. These functional capabilities make ATAS Corrugated Panel a versatile panel that meets a project’s structural and design needs, blending functionality with dynamicity. The panels were purchased through Handy Distribution and installed onto the residence by Bond Roofing. The ATAS panels are installed vertically on Steeplechase, seamlessly connecting the wall panels to the gable roofs to achieve a unified look. The panels frame tall windows that immerse the structure in the nature it surrounds. Together both exterior choices reflect the image of the natural landscape the home is nestled in, attempting to keep architecture unobtrusive and instead integrated with the natural world. The effect of such a design is a marvel of modern green building with a penchant for the details that creates wider and personal effects; the atmosphere surrounding the project is tranquil, exuding modern comfort and luxury as hybrid with nature.

Remarking on ATAS’ 2024 Project of the Year competition and the evolving uses of metal in modern architecture, Jim Bush, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for ATAS, said, “Your innovative use of metal panels shows the strength, beauty, and versatility that metal brings to modern building design and construction. These projects are a testament to the creativity and excellence driving our industry forward.”

The Steeplechase House project speaks for itself, having won first place in the Residential Walls category, and second place in the Residential Roofs category of ATAS’ 2024 Project of the Year Awards. It also won the Single Skin Wall Panel (Ribbed) category of the 2025 Metal Architecture Design Awards. The beauty and ingenuity of using sustainable materials and leveraging clarity and simplicity has created a unique place of modern comfort and luxury in the Steeplechase House that has built its well-earned prestige.
