The Fresh Market is a specialty grocery retailer focused on providing high-quality products in a unique and inviting atmosphere. Pacific Sheet Metal of Costa Mesa, Calif., utilizing products by RoofScreen Manufacturing, is helping ensure The Fresh Market stores in California have an inviting exterior as well.
When constructed, the rooftop of The Fresh Market in Sacramento housed the HVAC equipment and was in full view of adjacent buildings. To help The Fresh Market achieve its goal of creating an “inviting atmosphere” Pacific Sheet Metal was called upon to install a screening system from RoofScreen Manufacturing of Santa Cruz, Calif. RoofScreen designs, manufactures and distributes pre-engineered modular rooftop framing systems designed to be used as equipment screens as well as solar panel mounting racks on commercial and industrial buildings.
“We monitor projects that are up for bid,” said Shon Reim of Pacific Sheet Metal. “We get alerts and the projects are categorized. We specialize in retail building projects like The Fresh Market. We do roof screens, awnings and other sheet metal work.”
Pacific Sheet Metal landed the bid for The Fresh Market project and installed 320 lineal feet of the RoofScreen system around the HVAC equipment on the roof. The Fresh Market wanted the panels to match a color on the store that would be painted later. Pacific Sheet Metal installed pretreated 24-gauge Galvalume panels that could be painted later with the building.
“We like using RoofScreen products because we know we’re working with a watertight attachment,” Reim says. “It’s a pretty straight-forward install. The key is getting the system laid out exactly to specifications. There is a technique to it, but RoofScreen is good about taking care of us when we need help. We’ve done enough jobs now, we’ve got the hang of it.”
RoofScreen’s patented roof attachment system is engineered and leak-proof to ensure the integrity of the roofing system. It starts with a 6x6-inch steel base support, available in a variety of lengths to accommodate any insulation thickness. The support is attached with bolts or lag screws to the roof structure through the interior of the base support. Specially fitted flashing boots are then installed and roofed in by a qualified roofing contractor. After roofing is completed, a self-adhesive EPDM gasket strip is applied around the top of the flashing, which provides added protection from snow, ice and splashing water. The final step is to install the Base Cap Assembly, which counter-flashes 2.4 inches over the flashing and creates a seal by compressing the gasket. This watertight structural mounting point is ideal for mechanical equipment screens, equipment platforms and solar panel racking systems.
Reim said the first successful install led to two more jobs at The Fresh Market locations in Santa Barbara and Yorba Linda.
