With regard to human health, zinc is an essential trace element. With regard to architectural design and construction, it also provides many benefits. Case in point is the new Wellness Center at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. Thanks in part to the use of zinc on its origami-like roof form, the 61,000 sq. ft. building has the form to match its function. The zinc material was by RHEINZINK and the fabrication of the project’s double-lock standing seam roof panels was by Firestone Metal Products of Anoka, MN.
The wellness center offers comprehensive exercise, training and fitness amenities highlighted by a 38’-tall climbing wall, multiple recreation courts, a 3-lane track and state-of-the-art workout areas and equipment. While the new building will primarily serve as the campus hub of recreation, the Center is also open to members of the community and offers a variety of membership options.
The contemporary building was designed by RDG Planning & Design of Des Moines, IA. The firm incorporated 12,000 sq. ft. of Preweathered Blue Gray RHEINZINK into the exterior design by selecting it as the substrate for the Firestone UC-3 Double-Lock Standing Seam Roof Panels it had specified for the project. The zinc panel system was installed by Guarantee Roofing & Sheet Metal, Sioux Falls, SD.
