WakeMed North Expansion

LEED Gold-Certified Hospital Uses Three Concealed-Fastener Panel Profiles From CENTRIA

The first and only women's hospital in Wake County, North Carolina, the WakeMed North Family & Women’s Health Hospital provides a variety of services to women of all ages. Figuring prominently in the design of the new facility are architectural metal products from CENTRIA.

The 61-bed facility in Raleigh includes a variety of essential services from imaging, physician, obstetrics, rehab and surgical services, along with emergency care. Those key elements are coupled with luxuries such as in-room massages, manicures, pedicures and dry cleaning services, in addition to other amenities. To help families during what can be a stressful time, WakeMed North worked to develop a comfortable atmosphere that would help to put patients and their families at ease. The hospital features a warm and inviting environment resembling a hotel with modern restrooms, an outdoor terrace and plenty of wall textures and light to help make the entire experience a memorable one.

Expecting mothers can rest assured that when they arrive at WakeMed North to deliver, OB/GYN doctors will be present at all times. This assurance is part of the round-the-clock service model that enhances patient safety and improves outcomes.

The WakeMed North Family Health & Women’s Hospital underwent a major transformation. More than doubling in size from a 109,000 square-foot healthplex into a 249,000 square-foot acute care hospital required state-of-the-art building products to assist in revamping the facility.

Architects from BBH Design selected CENTRIA’s Concept Series single-skin concealed fastener panels to encompass over 43,000 square feet of the comprehensive hospital’s facade. CENTRIA's entire Concept Series line of products takes the single-skin profile panel and elevates it to new levels of cost-efficient aesthetics, innovation and performance.

The LEED Gold-certified hospital is equipped with CS-260, 210 and 200 concealed fastener panels that provided the WakeMed North Family & Women’s Hospital with numerous combinations of articulation, shadows and sight lines. In addition, its multiple colors stand out in the Carolina sunshine as a beacon of women’s health innovation.

Each Concept Series panel features concealed fasteners and a common-lock joint that allows the panels to be mixed for custom profiled wall relief. WakeMed North underwent its expansion to cater to the growing population in Wake County, so the all-weather installation capabilities and fast-track scheduling that the Concept Series Concealed Fastener Panels provide were an added benefit to help complete the expansion as soon as possible.

Not only is the hospital an example of innovation in women’s healthcare but also architectural excellence. WakeMed North’s expansion project received recognition from the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of the Carolinas with the Free Enterprise award and the Excellence in Construction award, in addition to ABC’s national Excellence in Construction award for projects ranging from $25-100 million. The building also earned a Best in Building Information Modeling (BIM) award from the ABC Carolinas chapter.

The architect was BBH Design of Raleigh, NC. The CENTRIA products dealer/installer was SECO Architectural Systems Inc. of Snellville, GA. The contractor was Brasfield & Gorrie LLC of Snellville, GA. The expansion was completed in 2015.
