RIMA-I Touts Publication of Research Paper on Reflective Materials for Metal-Frame Assemblies

Virginia Beach, VA – The Reflective Insulation Manufacturers Association International (RIMA-I) has announced the recent publishing by the Journal of Physics of a research paper on the performance of hybrid insulation systems with reflective materials for lightweight steel-framed (LSF) wall assemblies. Developed by Dr. David Yarbrough, R&D Services, Inc., Watertown, TN, USA and Dr. Hamed Saber, Royal Commission of Jubail and Yanbu, Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia, the paper is titled, “Thermal Performance of Hybrid Insulation Systems with Reflective Materials for Metal-Frame Assemblies.”

The abstract for the paper is as follows:

"This paper presents a numerical investigation of the thermal performance of lightweight steel-framed (LSF) wall systems incorporating hybrid insulation composed of reflective insulation and mass insulation. A previously validated three-dimensional model is employed to evaluate steady-state thermal resistance under conditions consistent with ASTM C1224. The model accounts for conduction, natural convection, and surface-to-surface radiation within wall assemblies that include steel framing members, enclosed airspaces, and insulation layers. The impact of surface emittance, mass insulation thermal conductivity, and cavity filling ratio on both the effective thermal resistance of the wall assembly and the thermal resistance of the wall cavity is examined. The results demonstrate that the contribution of reflective insulation increases with increasing mass insulation thermal conductivity and airspace thickness, highlighting important trade-offs between mass insulation thickness and airspace dimensions. The findings provide practical guidance for optimizing hybrid insulation systems in LSF wall applications. The results are interpreted in terms of the interaction between conduction through steel framing members, radiation across cavity airspaces, and natural convection within the cavity, providing practical guidance for hybrid insulation design."
