Completed in May 2012, Marlins Park is the first ballpark in Major League Baseball to achieve LEED Gold Certification for new construction. Home to the Miami Marlins, the new park is located on the former site of the Orange Bowl in the midst of a bustling public transportation hub. This 928,000 square foot facility is the pinnacle of modern and energy efficient design, featuring a retractable roof and glass wall as well as other modern enhancements. A variety of architectural metal products from CENTRIA were featured in the facility’s construction.

Numerous steps were taken throughout the construction and design process to utilize sustainable and energy efficient materials and products in structure. The design and construction teams made an effort to use regional resources to reduce energy costs. Approximately 58 percent of materials came from within a 500-mile radius and 68 percent of employees live in Miami-Dade County. In addition 98 percent of construction materials were either recycled or diverted from landfills.

The stadium seats 37,442 patrons and offers both premium and luxury suites. Patrons of all ages and palettes are pleased with the park’s 12 dining options including a poolside bar and grill. Visitors can watch the game from inside any of the suites or dining facilities on one of the 660 television monitors located throughout the stadium. In addition the ballpark houses numerous art installations from world-renowned artists like Daniel Arsham and Dominic Pangborn, as well as two large aquariums located behind home plate.

The 528’ retractable roof eliminates rain delays or cancellations and features solar panels that offer a 22.4 percent reduction in energy use. The design team was innovative their mission to utilize sustainable materials in the stadium; in some areas of the facility the floor was created using recycled Nike shoes. Other eco-friendly features include a low flow plumbing system that reduces water usage by 52 percent; a light-colored roof that reduces heat absorption, low VOC paints, sealants and adhesives; and numerous recycling receptacles located throughout the facility. To date Marlins Park is the most sustainable stadium in Major League Baseball.

Due to the nature of the project it was necessary that the design teams utilize eco-conscious materials in the stadium. CENTRIA products offer both sustainability and superior performance; many of the CENTRIA products used in this project contain pre- or post-consumer recycled waste.

CENTRIA Formawall panels create an aesthetically pleasing, exceptionally smooth building surface with mitered corner details and a concealed fixing system that produces clean, sharp lines and corners. The panels are available in flat and embossed surface treatments and can be curved or formed into a variety of shapes for design flexibility. The panels give the stadium a relaxed modern aesthetic designed to mimic the regions coastal scenery.

Formawall provides both advanced thermal and moisture protection (ATMP®) in a single panelized component decreasing both installation time and expenses. Panels offer a factory foamed-in-place core, minimizing insulation gaps and contributing to an impressive R-value of 14. A thermal break between the panel face and liner gives efficient ‘U’ values; high strength steel panels that offer increased spanning capabilities, saving on support costs; airtight construction, reducing energy consumption; and trimless ends that eliminate the requirement for extrusions or trims at panel joints, windows and other openings; and the availability of integrated glazing, louvers and solar shading.

CENTRIA’s Profile Series Exposed Fastener Profiles were chosen in both the Style-Rib and Super-Rib designs. With the option to install the Profile Series panels vertically or horizontally, these versatile panels provided the design team with unlimited options in terms of form, color and texture. In addition, they can be insulated to meet many levels of thermal protection and provide excellent negative wind load properties.

The design team selected CENTRIA’s Profile Series IW-10A concealed fastener panels because they provide a smooth, unbroken appearance adding to the sleek style of the exterior design. The all-weather installation capability provided an added benefit given the changing weather conditions during construction. And IW Series panels were a sustainable choice since they are manufactured from 25.5 percent post-consumer waste and 6.8 percent pre-consumer waste.

The EcoScreen Perforated Screenwall helped control light, provide ventilation and served as a safety component without sacrificing aesthetics. EcoScreen is a unique fabrication that provides a 10 to 40% open area, creating the effect of a translucent screen to control light, air movement and provide safety and security.

The project architect was Populous of Kansas City, MO; the CENTRIA products dealer/installer was Crown Corr Inc. of Gary, IN; and the contractor was Hunt/Moss, A Joint Venture of St. Louis, MO.
