Metal Sales™ Manufacturing Corporation provided 133,000 square feet of roof and wall panels to outfit the Central Arizona College (CAC) Maricopa Campus. The campus consists of three “academic sheds” and a central plant. The project team’s goal was to create highly sustainable structures that complement their surrounding landscape.
The CAC Maricopa Campus buildings feature a rectangular design with slanted roofs and deep canopies to provide a shaded outdoor area that allows interior academic spaces to flow outdoors seamlessly. To achieve this transition, the project team turned to Metal Sales.
“We chose Metal Sales because we have completed a number of successful projects with them throughout the years,” said Rudy Hernandez, Project Manager for Kovach Building Enclosures. “CAC Maricopa was a fast-paced project and Metal Sales manufactured panels over 80-feet long in a very short period of time.”
Metal Sales provided 90,000 square feet of its mechanically seamed 22 gauge Magna-Loc roof panel and 20,000 square feet of T5 trapezoidal rib panels for use on the canopies, both with a Cor-Ten® AZP Raw finish. Metal Sales also supplied 23,000 square feet of A606 type-4 pre-weathered flat sheets that Kovach fabricated, weathered and installed.
The three academic sheds and central plant serve as a starting point for the Maricopa campus design. CAC plans to expand Maricopa campus significantly over the next 20 years. The Cor-Ten panels naturally oxidize, requiring little maintenance and emphasizing the rural tone for the campus.

The project team for CAC Maricopa includes the building owner Pinal County Community College District; architect SmithGroup JJR, Phoenix, AZ; general contractor CORE Construction, Phoenix, AZ; and Metal panel fabricator and installer Kovach Building Enclosures, Chandler, AZ.
