Milton High School in Alpharetta, GA, has been designated as one of 100 Outstanding High Schools in the United States by U.S. News and World Report and has consistently been listed in Newsweek’s compilation of the best schools in the nation.

When the school outgrew its older downtown building, designers of the new structure utilized 8,000 sq. ft. of Petersen SNAP-CLAD™ 24 gauge panels to roof the dome-topped, multi-story entry hall that is the focal point of the facility. The 16” panels were finished in Slate Gray. In addition, approximately 30,000 sq. ft. of PAC-CLAD flat stock was used for coping on the overall project.

Design for the project was provided by Perkins + Will Architects, Atlanta. “The school has strong leadership from principal Ron Tesch and his goal was to have a very forward thinking educational environment in a very traditional envelope,” according to Katie Pedersen, Perkins + Will project manager. The design is based on an academy model that includes four academic wings that are off the main corridor, with each wing focused on a particular area of education.

Regarding selection of the Slate Gray finish, Pedersen reports “we were looking for something that had the terne-coated, weathered look that would be classic and withstand the test of time.”

Pedersen is a fan of metal standing seam roofs. “They offer good flexibility in the field, good color choices and panel widths, good durability and low maintenance. With some creativity, you can make the project look sleek and modern or you can make it look old and classic,” she said. “Standing seam roofs have the ability to have lots of different looks.”

Installation of the SNAP-CLAD panels was done by Construction Services, Inc., Alpharetta, GA. According to Greg Thorpe, “The job was pretty standard except for installing and flashing around the dome. That was definitely tricky and complicated. Plus, it was 100 ft. off the ground.” Fabrication of the dome was done by CopperCraft, Keller, TX. Construction Services also installed more than 100,000 sq. ft. of flat roof system on the project.
