The Heart of the City Health Center serves as the new home for the Ferguson Adult Health Center and Grand Rapid Pediatrics. A consolidation of three separate healthcare providers - Touchstone Innovare, Cherry Street Health Services and ProAction Behavioral Health Services - this joint venture will provide primary healthcare services to an additional 8,000 low-income individuals in the area annually. CENTRIA products are prominent elements of the facility’s design.

Located on the corner of Cherry and Sheldon Streets in the Heartside district of Grand Rapids, Michigan, this two-story medical complex cleaned up a former brownfield site and will be LEED certified. The center offers the latest in integrative physical and mental healthcare including dental and vision care, laboratory and x-ray services, mental health consultations, physical therapy and rehabilitation, an on-site pharmacy, and a new electronic medical records system.

CENTRIA’s MetalWrap Series horizontal panels were chosen by the architect for their outstanding performance. The MetalWrap Series insulated composite backup panel is a single thermal, air and moisture barrier backup system. Designed for use with CENTRIA’s Profile Series, brick, and terra cotta, MetalWrap’s flexibility makes it the perfect solution for either single-exterior or mixed-medium buildings. Additionally, only one system and specification was necessary, since MetalWrap eliminates the need for conventional batt or board installation, exterior gypsum board, and air, water, and vapor boards, reducing costs and increasing sustainability.

CENTRIA’s Concept Series CS-660 with MicroSeam corners created clean dramatic lines that complemented the facility’s brick exterior. These cost-effective single-skin panels can be installed both vertically and horizontally to provide a clean, unbroken appearance, allowing for interesting visual effects. In addition to the panels’ aesthetic appeal they offer superior performance as well. Panels can be insulated to meet various levels of thermal protection and the all-weather installation capability minimizes delays and permits fast-track scheduling, an advantage when building throughout Michigan’s changing seasons. MicroSeam Corners use cutting edge structural bonding techniques to produce corners that appear virtually seamless. Manufactured from the same substrate coil as the panels, MicroSeam Corners are a cost-effective alternative that eliminate riveting, welding and post-painting.

The project architect was Design Plus of Grand Rapids, MI; the CENTRIA products dealer/installer was Architectural Metals Inc. of Portland, MI; and the contractor was Pioneer Construction of Grand Rapids, MI.
