About half way between Dallas and the Louisiana border lies the growing community of Tyler, Texas. Home to more than 100,000 residents, the city is recognized in the region as a destination for education and technology. Tyler is home to four colleges and universities, along with two regional hospital systems. As the city continues to invest in the future, both in the private and public sectors, the Tyler Fire Station #5 provides a great example for what’s to come.

Catering to the west side of the city in a very visible lot, the Tyler Fire Station #5 needed to both flow functionally and look good doing it. The team at Lochner BWR Division, Tyler, put together plans for the 8,865 square-feet building, and turned to McElroy Metal and Sherwin-Williams to top the project off, literally. The brick and stone walls are accented by a curved metal roof constructed using more than 14,000 square-feet of McElroy’s 2"-tall Maxima ADV standing seam panels, finished in a Medium Bronze Sherwin-Williams Fluropon® paint.

Hefner Roofing of Pittsburg, Texas was enlisted to install the curvaceous roof, which took a team of eight men a little less than four weeks to complete. The coated metal panels were curved onsite by McElroy, where the team from Hefner Roofing of Pittsburg, TX then used a custom-made hoist to reel them to the top of the building. Once in place, the panels were clipped and seamed in standard fashion. Utilizing a metal roof will help to keep cooling costs low and extend the overall life of the building. Metal roofs, as compared to their counterparts, put less weight on a building, leading to less stress on the wall structure.

Recognized as both a durable and attractive option, metal roofs are also low maintenance. When combined with an architectural coating like Fluropon, functionality is increased. Sherwin-Williams' flagship coating is known for its resistance to calking and fading. It’s also often chosen for its color retention and formability properties. Sure to bring these qualities to the Tyler Fire Station #5, the Fluropon-clad roof sets the bar for new buildings to come as the city continues to thrive.
