When Frank’s Italian Restaurant (formerly Frank’s Pizza) in Wappingers Falls, NY began construction on an expanded new facility, they wanted a metal tile roof that would blend architecturally with the planned brick construction while also meeting tight budgetary constraints. “The roof that was initially specified proved too costly, and a web search led us to the Met-Tile system,” says Ray Travis, vice president of Mid Hudson Construction Management, the general contractor for the project. “By selecting Met-Tile, we were able to stay within the client’s budget without compromising aesthetics or performance.”

The project utilizes about 4,000 sq ft (40 squares) of Met-Tile roofing panels in lengths ranging from 3' to 20' as needed to fit the roof design. The Slate Grey panels provide a contrast in color and texture to the brickwork, while the Spanish ridge and hip trim give the roof an authentic tile-roof look that is not recognizable to customers as a facsimile product.

“Not only are people surprised that the roof is metal, but they are even more surprised to learn that it is constructed of long-length panels,” says Travis. “Some metal tile products come in 2' x 3' sections that are more time-consuming to apply. The long-length, 3'-wide Met-Tile panels are cut precisely to fit the job, making installation faster and easier. Though we had never worked with the product before, the vertical eave-to-ridge installation process is similar to that of other metal panel roofing, so we did not encounter any problems.”

The panels were installed over a standard wood deck and felt underlayment. Travis said that the installation extended over about three weeks as the crew worked on other aspects of the project simultaneously. The 26-gauge Met-Tile panels and color-matched trim feature an ENERGY STAR® SMP paint system manufactured by Becker Specialty Corp.

A Local Showcase

Travis reports that the new restaurant stands on the same footprint as the previous Frank’s Pizza building, which was torn down to make way for the larger, modernized facility. An added second story is used for storage, and mechanical equipment is concealed on the roof.

“The restaurant is located right on Route 9 in a high visibility location, and it is the showcase of the village right now,” Travis sums up. “It looks great, and the owner has received many compliments on the building and the roof.”

Mid Hudson Construction Management (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) was the general contractor and roof installer for the project. ADG Design Group (Staatsburg, N.Y.) was the architect.
