Riverview Yacht Condos of Juneau, Alaska underwent re-roofing of two of their buildings. When metal roofing contractor Design North, Inc., also of Juneau, was given the latitude of coming up with different re-roofing solutions to prevent chronic leaking problems, their first thought was to use Roof Hugger Retrofit Systems.

Design North being no stranger to the Roof Hugger way of re-roofing, they immediately made the recommendation to Riverview’s proprietors. With a climate that produces over 5 feet of rainfall and 7 feet of snow per year, scheduling and installation was hallmark to the project. They knew Roof Hugger solutions allow a new metal roof to be installed directly over old problematic roofs, which permits the installation to progress during somewhat inclement weather and without interrupting the building inhabitants or its operations. Nor do they expose the building contents to damage as a typical roof tear-off and replacement does.

To the benefit of Riverview’s boat owners, a new long-term performance 24-gauge standing seam metal roof was installed over the 16-gauge Roof Huggers. The 14” wide roof panels were roll-formed at the jobsite in 51 foot lengths, thus eliminating any laps from the roof’s ridge to its eaves.

Interestingly enough, the Roof Hugger Systems have been tested to determine that they strengthen the existing building roof purlins to accommodate the additional weight of the new roofing system. In addition, the air-space created between the old and new roofs provided what is known as Above Sheathing Ventilation, or “ASV”. According to Oak Ridge National Laboratories near Knoxville, TN, these assemblies produce a convective ventilated plenum that assist in reducing heat loss in the colder months and heat gain in warmer months by as much as 30-45% depending on the type of metal roof coating. This benefit comes at a very low price tag.

Design North’s construction crew of seven men completed the 46,000 square foot project on schedule within 6 weeks.

About Roof Hugger

They can be used over screw-down or standing seam roof systems and can accommodate new standing seam or screw-down panels. Roof Huggers also maintain integrity of original design loadings; achieve "thermal break" air space between old and new roof sheets; allow for optional insulation; and are laboratory and load tested—with certified load charts.
