D.A. Craghead Construction Inc. of San Luis Obispo, CA was awarded 2nd Runner Up in American Buildings’ 2022 Excellence in Design Awards, in addition to 1st Place in the Commercial category, for the Rugged Radios project in Arroyo Grande, CA.

The 15,000 sq. ft. flagship building for Rugged Radios, built by D.A. Craghead Construction, features accent columns and trim, a structural steel tower, and varying wall panel and trim colors to enhance the architectural design elements. Two 5,000 sq. ft. ancillary metal buildings showcase a traditional style with parapets, special accent trims and glass sectional doors. A small metal building anchors the corner of the development and was designed to emulate an old gas station. Small, yet complex, this building has a level canopy and utilizes insulated metal panels, soffits, and special trims. The vintage radio tower and gas station theme made the project a shoo-in to be constructed of metal building products, providing the campus with a feeling of an era gone-by with the modern efficiencies of a wide-open structure.

The highly anticipated Excellence in Design Awards competition is open to all American Buildings Authorized Builders. The awards recognize Builders for their innovation, diverse application, and distinction in design in the metal buildings industry. Winners are selected by an independent panel of judges.

This year, judges chose from over 100 entries and selected the best projects in each of the following categories: Agriculture; Auto Dealership; Church/Religious Centers; Commercial; Government/Institutional; Manufacturing/Industrial; Office; Recreation; Retail; Special Projects; Transportation; and Warehouse/Distribution.

Winners were announced for each category and were eligible to compete for the Excellence in Design top award: 2022 Building of the Year.
