In the 1940s, the Ely Seaplane Base on Lake Shagawa in northern Minnesota’s Superior National Forest was the most active inland seaplane base in the entire United States. It’s uncertain how the base ranks today, but it is still in operation and continues to be maintained by the U.S. Forest Service. As part of a recent round of base improvements, officials there installed a new 52’-wide by 17’-high bifold door on one of the base’s hangars. It was manufactured by Schweiss Doors of Fairfax, MN.
