The Butler Transit Authority’s new Intermodal Transit Center was commissioned as the first LEED Certified transit facility in the state of Pennsylvania, achieving a silver rating. Located in Butler, Pennsylvania, the project features Rigid Frame metal systems from Varco Pruden Buildings.

The transit center houses administration, maintenance and wash bay, and storage for the Butler Transit Authority’s fleet, as well as the share ride buses for Butler County.

Green initiatives incorporated into the project include: a geothermal heating/cooling system, a wash-water reclamation system, waste oil burners, skylights and motion sensors, recycled tile and carpet, and low VOC paint.

The metal building systems used to create the transit authority facility measure 12,210 sq. ft. and 23,310 sq. ft. and were completed in December 2010.

In addition to the Rigid Frame structural systems, Varco Pruden also supplied front canopy support framing and Galvalume-coated steel SSR panels for the roof. Beige wall panels from Kingspan were also used.

“The coordination between the architect, Varco Pruden and the general contractor gave us a building we are proud to have at our facility,” said Karl Knechtel, facility manager for the Butler Transit Authority. “Many people comment on the great looking building and we are pleased to show it off. We know this building will allow us to provide our community with the services they require and will permit us to grow into the future.”

The Varco Pruden Builder was Uhl Construction Company Inc. of Allison Park, PA. The project was designed by Camp, Dresser & McKee Inc. of Pittsburgh, PA.
