Cobalt Stables

Metal Systems From Star Used In The Creation Of Stable Facility

A new four-building project, utilizing metal systems from Star Building Systems, consists of one large clear span metal building with three smaller buildings which form the shape of a cross. Owned by Morgan Horse LLC, the Cobalt Stables buildings in Kansas City, KS, feature metal components, composite roofing and wood in a functional and seamlessly integrated living space for humans and horses. The total square footage is approximately 25,432.

The two-story living area in the center of the cross is 36’ x 71’ with a total of 5,112 sq. ft. The wings on either side of the house contain the stables and each are 2,160 sq. ft. The walls are framed with 2 x 6 wood studs to 10’-0” above the slab. Above 10’-0” consists of typical steel framing.

All three buildings feature exterior skin of Star PBR metal panels and LTPs in the stables for natural light. Spray insulation was used in the wall cavity and sandwiched with Star liner panels. Radiant heat was incorporated into the floor slabs. The roofs have composition shingles on top of plywood deck attaching to Star purlins.

The 80’ x 200’ x 17’ arena building is insulated and heated by a series of two-inch gas pipe radiant heaters which run down the long sides of the arena a few feet below the ceiling. The roof consists of Star 26 gauge PBR panel in Snow White. The walls are 26 gauge PBR in Slate Gray and include LTPs running along the sidewalls at an elevation of 10’-0” above the slab.

The Star Builder was Weigel Construction, Olathe KS; Weigel handled general contracting and erected the buildings. The architect was Urban Prairie Architectural, Kansas City, MO.

Completed in December 2016, this project was the recipient of Star’s 2016 Builder’s Choice Master Builder Award.
