Speed of design, cost, appearance, ease of changes during design and a structure-supported bridge crane all show the versatility of a custom metal building, by Star Building Systems, and why it was chosen for the construction of the High Plains Equipment – Case IH facility in Devils Lake, ND.

This project consists of three buildings; a symmetrically gabled structure and two lean-to buildings each braced by the gabled building. Total square footage is 38,117 with an additional 7,950 sq. ft. of second level mezzanine; joist & deck provided by New Millennium. Several point loads were incorporated into the design of the roof, the heaviest being 2,700 lbs. The gabled structure houses two 5-ton bridge cranes with a length of 175’ and 35’ span. Some other design considerations are the below-eave boxed canopy with a 0.5:12 slope and 3’ projection, two 30’ wide x 18’ high overhead doors and a 100’ wide clear span lean-to.

The roof consisted of 38,355 sq. ft. of Galvalume Plus Double-Lok panels formed from 24 gauge material, while the majority of the walls utilized 26 gauge PBR panels in Polar White. Horizontally-applied PBC panels in Brite Red and Artisan L/12 Polar White soffit panels were utilized on the canopy along with Brite Red trim and PBR roof panels. Horizontally-applied 32” wide PBC panels in Galvalume Plus were used on the smallest portion of the project to offset the mass of the building. Guardian Building Products supplied the R-35 Energy Saver insulation system in the ceiling and the R-25 Energy Saver in the walls.

The architect for this project was Icon Architectural Group of Grand Forks, ND. The Star Builder, general contractor and erector was Construction Engineers Ltd., headquartered in Grand Forks, ND. The project is owned by John Swenseth.
