Barrel & Bushel

Bifold Doors Connect Restaurants Indoor And Outdoor Areas

When Barrel & Bushel, a beer-centric restaurant at Tysons Corner, Va., says, “Handcrafted Just for You,” the reference is to more than the location, extensive menu and beverage list. It includes the upscale surroundings in which you can enjoy a place to relax and visit.

Barrel & Bushel is located in the heart of business district on the Tysons Corner Center Plaza at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. The restaurant offers a classy barn/picnic feel and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, into the late evening.

“It’s a brand-new concept,” says Anthony Cavallo, general manager. “We want our neighbors and guests visiting us in Northern Virginia to experience our region’s growing craft food and beverage industry. Our food is complemented by our barrel-forward drink selections, completed by 22 local and regional craft beers on tap, more than 40 bourbons and a wide assortment of unique wines and handcrafted cocktails that will satisfy any palate.”

Purchasing local and creating handcrafted elements wherever possible, Barrel & Bushel embraces the philosophy of serving handmade, handcrafted and hand-harvested food through a menu of regionally inspired food. The friendly and knowledgeable staff, led by Chef Dan Dienemann and Cavallo, are all beer enthusiasts, wine livers, spirit specialists and food fanatics!

“Barrel & Bushel thinks sitting at the bar should be fun,” Cavallo says. “Our new restaurant offers a unique combination of neighborhood and destination dining, providing the best in locally sourced ingredients for our house-made specialties, including fresh sausages, seasonal desserts and signature handmade fudge, plus outstanding beer and cocktail options.”

The bar is large and opens to outdoor restaurant seating. Two Schweiss Doors custom-made bifold liftstrap glass doors opens to the outside. One door, measuring 24-feet wide by seven-feet, one-inch high, opens to an outdoor seating area. The other bifold door, measuring 24-feet wide by three-feet, seven-inches high, opens to outdoor patrons who can belly up to the bar – the door closes on the top of the bar. The doors are clad in glass, giving an unobstructed view of a plaza and garden area outside in all types of weather and they allow a significant amount of light in to brighten up the bar and dining area. Both doors have electric photo eye sensors.

“The outdoor seating patio, which can accommodate 70 people, is wonderful,” Cavallo says. “We get a lot of use out of the doors every day. Fantastic for people watching! The vibe is non-stuffy casual and yet still upscale with a lively crowd. This place is already a hit in the warm weather. Even when it is raining, we have enough overhang so they can still sit outside. The doors have a unique design to them and they are easy to put up and down quickly.”

The inside, with room for about 130 more customers, consists mostly of long communal tables in a dark wood, some of them with cool swinging attached chairs. There is a large patio area with more “picnicesque” tables and some lounging areas. The Silverline Metrorail system runs up to the plaza near Barrel & Bushel, bringing even more customers into the establishment.

Johnson Architectural Metal Company Inc. (JAMCo) of Marietta, Ga., is a glazing company that carried out the curtainwall and window installation for the hotel and restaurant and installed the doors. Marco Thomas, Senior Project Manager at JAMCo, says this was his introduction to the Schweiss Doors line. He says the doors were specified by the design team, Crème Design of Brooklyn, N.Y., and that the installation went well. Thomas says he enjoyed working with the engineers from Schweiss and would recommend them to others.

The Sparrow Room at Barrel & Bushel offers an intimate, private dining experience for up to 16 guests. Whether dining with friends and family or hosting a meeting, The Sparrow Room strikes a balance between comfort and style, complete with a gas fireplace. The culinary team will help customers design the perfect menu and prepare the meal with a selection of the freshest local ingredients. The Sparrow Room is available daily for breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner.

“Every Tuesday, we host Tap Tuesday, when we invite a brewer to come in and serve free samples of their beer,” Cavallo says. We recently started to host private beer and food tastings. In the future, we hope to host a festival series out on the plaza three or four times a year, celebrating our seasonal selections of beer and food, while providing a new experience for our community.”

The restaurant is beer and bourbon focused. The beers are local and regional and the selection is fairly vast. Bushel & Barrel gets its name from a well-balanced blend of Kentucky bourbon with Berentzen Apple Liqueur for something akin to spiked cider. Founded in 1758 in Haselünne, Germany, Berentzen is known for its eponymous apple liqueur, as well as some other fruit liqueurs.

“The ambiance of this restaurant is similar to Founding Farmer’s with a cleaner, more sophisticated look,” according to a client testimonial. “Interesting how one side of the restaurant is literally open to the outside, don’t know how to describe it, but this would be perfect for warmer month dining. Décor is really spot on, as well as the service. Four stars for the atmosphere and décor.”
