Metal Sales Manufacturing Corporation provided its T2630 perforated and solid metal wall panels for Cloverdale749, a 10,500-square-foot residential structure located in Los Angeles, CA. The modern six-unit building is located just around the block from the historic Miracle Mile hub, near the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the A+D Architecture and Design Museum.
The 9,700-square-foot lot, and local planning and zoning regulations, restricted the dimensions of the building. Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects (LOHA) chose to build Cloverdale749 to the maximum allowed size to provide the most interior and exterior living spaces. To do so, LOHA needed a sustainable cladding material with a long lifespan that also visually satisfied their design intent.
“We specified metal because we know it works well in the Southern California climate,” said Lorcan O’Herlihy, FAIA, President of Lorcan O’Herlihy Architects. “The perforated panels allowed us to achieve an effect of translucent layers wrapping the exterior, which was the primary focus of our design.”
LOHA designed the façades with openings that allow residents to have views of the city and the famous Hollywood Sign. Metal Sales™ wall panels provide privacy from the street and shading for occupants. However, residents are not shut off from exterior views and fresh airflow, because perforated panels surround the exterior balconies while solid panels cover the rest of the exterior. The perforated and solid panels flow seamlessly to complete the modern design.
Metal Sales provided its T2630 wall panel in Linen White to clad the exterior of Cloverdale749. All panel colors from Metal Sales are listed with ENERGY STAR®, helping to reduce the solar heat load on the building and, as a result, its energy expenditures for cooling. The panels also have a long lifespan of 50 years or more, are 100% recyclable and contain a high percentage of recycled material that contribute to sustainable building goals.
“A holistic strategy is applied to all of our projects, looking at passively sustainable elements that may be incorporated into the building’s design,” said O’Herlihy. “The recycled content, recyclability and white color of the metal panels are sustainable attributes within the building’s skin. The cladding also helps prevent light from penetrating the glazing on three facades, thus cooling the interface of the exterior and reducing the demand for cooling energy.”
In addition to its products, Metal Sales boasts a history of more than 50 years of providing outstanding customer service. The company’s highly-trained professionals offer comprehensive, user-friendly product information and work with project managers, estimators, installers and engineers until each product application is successfully completed. Due to its efforts to maintain this level of customer service, Metal Sales has developed a long-lasting partnership with its customers.
“Through prior experience with Metal Sales, we know that the cladding is a quality product with a long life cycle, needing little maintenance while retaining its color and durability,” said O’Herlihy. “Additionally, Metal Sales has always been very responsive and supportive of our designs. They are helpful and committed to the detailing we strive to bring to our work. It’s been a successful collaboration.”
