As the photos illustrate, the 124,090 sq. ft. Con-Way LaSalle XLA operation in LaSalle, IL, is an impressive metal building project. A custom metal building by Star Building Systems was chosen due to cost and time restraints. The ability to utilize several wall systems as well as wrap around door jams also made a custom metal building very appealing.

An extremely challenging part of this project was for a 1,300 foot long building to slope from one end to the other. Also, the dock building was built on a sloped foundation wall. Every four bays the building’s height shifted, even though the eaves remained at the same elevation.

This complex is covered by Star’s StarShield Roof System in Snow White color, while StarMark Wall System panels, also in Snow White color, were used on the walls. The facility was completed in October 2008.

The Star builder was Altra Builders, University Park, IL. The general contractor was Layton Construction, Sandy, UT. The steel erector was Joliet Steel & Construction, Joliet, IL. The architect was TranSystems Corporation, Kansas City, MO.

In conjunction with the Star products, split face black was used on the office’s exterior walls. A mezzanine, used in the office area, was fabricated by Altra Builders. A Star straight facade with a 5 foot projection was used around all three sides of the office. The facade framing was wrapped with a special flat panel provided by MBCI.

Rigid insulation was used in the service shop in lieu of vinyl face insulation.
