The 450 members of First Baptist Church in Wimberley, Texas, were anxious to get into their new location in the heart of Texas Hill Country not only because they needed the room, but because the purchaser of the old facility had given them a time limit in which to relocate.
COSCO and Associates, Inc., of Crestview, Florida, a design/build construction company that specializes in building places of worship, busily got to work, teaming with Ceco Building Systems to create a beautiful worship facility with the “Hill Country” look requested by the church.
To do this COSCO applied local materials, including Austin cut-stone and exposed cedar, to a custom-designed Ceco Buildings Systems steel structure, which provided the fast and efficient erection necessary for the available time frame. The new church building was also designed to be a “green” facility, using an enormous rainwater collection tank to meet the water needs of the congregation.
In addition to the time limitation, another construction challenge was the terrain of the new site. It was comprised mostly of rock, which had to be moved in order to construct the new facility.
The project was originally designed to be approximately 35,000 square feet and include an education area, sanctuary and family life center, but due to financial constraints, the family life center was postponed until Phase II, and the facility was re-designed to 21,000 square feet.
