Metal Building Company (MBC), an authorized American Buildings Company (ABC) Builder, recently built a residence for the Mossman-Nguyen family, diverging from their conventional metal building structures. In five months, MBC and the general contractor, KS Design Build, combined the traditional pre-engineered design with custom residential features.
Chosen for their proven track record of excellence, MBC erected the 2,460 square foot house economically and efficiently in the owner’s hometown of Oakland, Calif. Because design elements were ongoing, MBC and KS Design Build worked collectively during the many phases of the building process to ensure all requirements were met for this custom-built project.
“This was a unique job for us, but our team enjoyed branching out of our comfort zone for this dynamic project,” said Jim Banfield, Metal Building Company’s Sales Manager. “We provided and installed the steel system consisting of the siding, roofing and wall framing. The metal components were chosen in collaboration with the owner who wanted the metal framing exposed in an inexpensive way.”
The combination of residential features included a stucco exterior, South American hardwood, exposed-fastener exterior siding and a covered patio with hardwood siding. A gable rigid frame was used as the framing system to give the house an open feeling, while American Long Span III panels were used for the roof and wall applications.
“The American Long Span III was chosen for this project because it is cost effective and easy to install, which were important factors to the owner,” said Dan Stevens, American Buildings Company Manager. “These wall and roof panels have 1-1/4” ribs on 12” centers for an even-shadowed appearance and are reinforced between the ribs for added strength. In addition, these panels are SmartKote® ‘cool’ coated to reflect solar rays more effectively and reduce the amount of heat that is absorbed into the respective building.”
SmartKote® is a paint coating applied to the metal panels that are used on roofs and exterior walls. In order to be considered “cool”, SmartKote® panels must have a solar reflectance of at least 25 percent. Cool metal roofs coated with the PVDF (polyvinylidene flouride) can reduce energy consumption by up to 40 percent as part of a total system design.
For nearly 35 years MBC has provided complete and economical solutions for new, pre-engineered metal buildings, metal building alterations and repairs in the San Francisco Bay Area. As an ABC Builder, MBC is flexible enough that they were able to work on a residential project as distinct as this one.
Combining a love of building with a devotion of detail, MBC and KS Design Build completed the custom built house in October of 2011, and the satisfied owner moved in soon after the project was finished.
