A huge project at the Air National Guard Base in Martinsburg, WV, is underway to prepare the 167th Airlift Wing for the arrival of 11 C-5 Galaxy aircraft which will be housed at the base. The C-5 is one of the largest aircraft in the world and the largest airlifter in the Air Force inventory.

More than $190 million in federal funding has been invested at the facility including new hangars, fuel lines and a flight simulator.

The new C-5 Maintenance Hangar utilizes approximately 70,000 sq. ft. of Metl-Span 2” CF-42 Mesa wall panels. Panel lengths range from 20’ to 45’ and are finished in Sandstone color.

Installation of the Metl-Span panels was done by Iron City Constructors, Inc. of Aliquippa, PA. Iron City Constructors is experienced in working with Metl-Span. “They [Metl-Span] always provide good technical and engineering support,” said project coordinator Ed Carrozza. “This project was no exception although it was pretty straight-forward. We did have some challenges in fabricating a hidden eave gutter that required the use of short panels on the outside and inside of the box enclosure. And the gambrel roof design required the wall panels to be bevel cut.”

The CF Mesa panels are well suited for exterior wall and interior partition wall applications. The lightly corrugated profile on both faces of the panel ensures symmetry from outside the building to inside.

The general contractor on the project was Clark Construction, Bethesda, MD. The design team consisted of CH2M HILL, Herndon, VA and DMJM Design, San Francisco, CA.
