Picard Steel Erectors (PSE) of Breaux Bridge, LA completed a metal-over-metal roof retrofit for Office Mart, an office supply business in New Iberia, LA, using Roof Hugger, Inc. sub-purlins. The overall project was to re-roof the combination of a Mex-Tex building constructed in the mid-1960’s and a Star building built in the 1980’s.

The existing buildings were roofed with typical 12” on center rib panels over purlins spaced approximately 5’-0” on center. The Roof Huggers were manufactured to accommodate new 3” thick fiberglass insulation installed between the old roof and underside of the new 26 gauge Galvalume PBR-Panels supplied by S&S Steel Buildings of Arnaudville, LA. New rooftop equipment supports were provided by LMCurbs of Longview, TX. The 11,250 square foot project was completed during May 2013, with several rain delays.

Located in the Louisiana bayou country, Joe Picard Inc. is a family-owned and operated contracting firm that has focused on metal construction since 1979, including an expertise in retrofit metal roof systems. The company operates as Picard Steel Erectors as well as other subsidiaries that include Architectural & Engineering Consultants Inc. and Commercial Building Products. The company services general contractors and building owners within a 200-mile radius, offering design-build services, metal building erection and metal roofing. Joey Picard, President, has worked at the company since his father, Joe started the company. He continues operations under the same principles and focus that his father set forth years ago.

Tony Eden, Estimator/Project Manager of PSE, said that between retrofit roofing and metal building repairs a 4-man crew for PSE is kept busy 75% to 80% of the year. It was noted that metal-over-metal retrofit roofing is an easy business for metal contractors to pursue, providing ongoing work year round and, with the focus on energy savings that is so prevalent today, the opportunities are growing.

About Roof Hugger

roof hugger logoRoof Hugger notched sub-purlins enable replacement of new metal roof panels over an old metal roof. They can be used over screw-down or standing seam roof systems and can accommodate new standing seam or screw-down panels. Roof Huggers also maintain integrity of original design loadings; achieve "thermal break" air space between old and new roof sheets; allow for optional insulation; and are laboratory and load tested—with certified load charts.
