A training center for the Navy Seabees, this facility in Port Hueneme, CA, totals five buildings with canopy and gable overhangs on all buildings. In addition to framing systems, Star Building Systems provided their StarShield standing seam roof system as well as soffit and liner panels in DuraRib profiles.
This complex structure had many challenges for the Builder. The first being that the gable overhangs on the left and right “T sections” intersected with the canopy overhangs on the sidewalls of the main structure. Thus, creating covered breezeways. These breezeways were accomplished by hip and valley conditions. The breezeways received additional framing so the soffit and roof condition on the inside created a flat ceiling versus a sloped one.
The entrance building was attached to the bottom of the “T” to create an offset condition for aesthetic purposes. Star designed and fabricated steel bond beams on all exterior walls to hold the metal stud and stucco treatments. Due to the interior requirements, portal frame bracing was used on all walls.
Additional features to the structure include: soffits on all canopy and gable overhangs, with special box flashing to accommodate the stucco walls. Special point loading was positioned in two areas of the building for hanging partitions weighing 130 pounds per foot. Star was able to design special slotted connections in areas to handle the diversity of movement by all buildings and materials.
The biggest challenge in erecting this structure was keeping all the peaks, hips and valleys in straight lines. In addition, special care had to be given to keep the steel from moving as there were several point loads creating deflections. Special care was given to the expansion flashings for the same reasons.
