Working from solid sheets of .125”-thick copper, M.G. McGrath of Maplewood, MN, fabricated and installed a truly one-of-a-kind screen wall for the Westminster Church in Minneapolis, MN. The screen was designed by Meyer & Scherer of Rockcastle, MN, and features the artwork of Coen & Partners of Minneapolis. The screen is installed across the front and back of the church property and required approximately 200 copper panels, each measuring 3’10”-wide x 8’ high, to complete.

Metal panels provided the crowning touch for a fascia that wraps the office of the new Genco Company building in Massillon, OH. The panels were formed on a shop brake and then installed by Classic Metals Ltd. of Holmesville, OH. To create the detailed tongue-and-groove/board-and-batten panels, the contractor bent each 24"-wide panel a total of 11 times, resulting in a finished exposure of 15".

When Galveston builder Paul Gandhi set out to construct his 7,000-sq. ft. vacation home, he wanted a roof that would withstand the elements and also offer environmental benefits. In 2004, Gandhi had used Met-Tile “tile panel” roofing on a La Quinta hotel property in Galveston and was impressed with the product’s aesthetics and how well it stood up under punishing conditions of hurricane winds and rain, high heat and intense sunlight. It was no surprise then that he chose Met-Tile for his own residence too.

From an architectural standpoint, the new West Haven City Hall in Ogden, UT, needed to be innovative and bold, yet warm and inviting. Solerno Architects of Ogden succeeded in creating such a building and environment by mixing masonry with metal for its design. The selected metal roofing profile was BattenLok from MBCI. Over 11,000 sq. ft. of straight and curved panels were required. The project's general contractor was Big "D" Construction. All Metals Fabrications handled the metal panel installation. Both companies are headquartered in Ogden.

A Landscape Interior metal fabric application from Cambridge Architectural adds a mix of visual interest and unique textural appeal to the interior of Victory Plaza in Dallas, TX. The mixed-use Plaza – located at the heart of Dallas’ changing streetscape – stands as a beacon to the neighboring American Airlines Arena, and functions as an integral part of Victory Park, a bustling $3 billion, 72-acre development modeled after New York City’s Time Square. As arena visitors pass through the buildings that comprise the Plaza, they are greeted by Cambridge Architectural’s Landscape Interior application, which mirrors the modern, high-energy styling that makes the expansive development an award-winning architectural attraction.

The project manager for glass and glazing subcontractor Alliance Glass & Metals, Romeoville, IL, wanted a panel system that his crew could install along with the glazing and curtainwall on the new Wickes Furniture project on Elston Avenue in Chicago. The patented Dri-Design® dry joint, pressure-equalized rainscreen metal wall system was selected to meet that objective. More than 2,600 sq. ft. of .080"-thick aluminum panels, with an Arcadia Green paint finish, were installed on the job.

Everything about the Johnny Janosik World of Furniture is on a grand scale--except for the electric bills. The 221,000 sq. ft. showroom/warehouse facility was built using a Butler metal building system. The R-38 roof assembly incorporates Butler's MR-24 standing seam panels, while the walls are constructed using Koreteck insulated wall panels. Together with a sophisticated industrial refrigeration system for cooling and high-efficiency gas boilers for heating, the product choices add up to an estimated annual electricity savings of $150,000.

As a means of blending 3,500 sq. ft. of new construction with an existing 1,500 sq. ft. structure, Johansson Architecture of Battle Ground, WA, utilized metal roofing from AEP Span in its design of the new Charter Oak Station 11-2. In addition to providing the necessary level of protection for the facility, the roofing choice allowed the architect to blend the fire station's appearance with its largely rural setting. The roof system was installed by Oak Hill Roofing & Sheet Metal of Battle Ground. Rehfeldt Construction of Vancouver, WA, was the general contractor.

The Museum Residences, part of an urban spatial composition anchored by the new Denver Art Museum expansion, are wrapped in transparent and opaque glass and accented with dramatic diagonal RHEINZINK® panels. Designed by Studio Daniel Libeskind, New York, and Davis Partnership Architects, Denver, the $32 million, 126,000 sq. ft. project includes 55 luxury condominiums that offer “gallery-inspired living.”

When the project team started planning the Bachelor Enlisted Quarters (BEQ) at the Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe, Hawaii, they sought a design that would complement existing buildings on the Base while combining aesthetics with construction economies. A Met-Tile aluminum “tile panel” roofing system from McElroy Metal provided a similar look to the existing clay and concrete tile roofs at a significantly lighter weight, while also delivering the many performance benefits associated with metal roofing.

Located in Bloomington, MN, the new home of Motorwerks BMW & Mini is a two-story, state-of-the-art showroom and service center with an attached four-story enclosed lot. It was designed by Phillips Architects & Contractors of Minneapolis to reflect the sophistication of the automobiles on display. To that end, the 200,000 sq. ft. building is clad predominantly with Alcoa Architectural Products' Reynobond aluminum composite metal wall panels. The material use was carried over to the interior spaces as well.

The architectural firms involved in the design and construction of Brookside Elementary School in Indianapolis, IN, both agree that it took some effort to convince the school board to go with a contemporary design for the new 90,000 sq. ft. facility. David Franklin, principal with Domain Architecture, the associate firm on the project, acknowledges “pushing for a contemporary design” and claims the new school is “by far the most interesting of the ten new schools funded by the bond issue.” A highlight of the design is two prominent canopies wrapped with Citadel Panel 20 MCM panels.

Wanting the look of smooth metal wall panels without the potential drawbacks related to caulked joints, Nashville, TN-based Everton Oglesby Architects chose Dri-Design panels for the exterior of the new East Park Community Center in that city. The project required 14,000 sq. ft. of the .050”-thick aluminum panels, finished in White, Patina Green and Orange. The 9,000 sq. ft. of metal wall panels needed to complete the project were installed by JWC Specialties, Nashville.

Like most restaurant chains, Chipotle Mexican Grills have a look. But counter to the norm, that look is not necessarily the same from one location to the next. Within an overall design parameter and using common elements, each restaurant is designed to be unique. And so it goes in Littleton, CO, where the exterior of a newly completed Chipotle location features Laminators Inc.'s Omega-Lite aluminum composite metal wall panels. The restaurant was designed by MJ Cassutt Architects while Sondrup Sheet Metal handled the panel installation.

The beauty of Contrarian Metal Resources’ InvariMatte-finish stainless steel is evident in the design of a curved concourse at the Education and Conference Center of Fletcher Allen Health Center in Burlington, VT. It features approximately 60,000 sq. ft. of the exterior wall panels and standing seam roofing formed from the material. The concourse was constructed as part of the Fletcher Allen Health Center Renaissance Project, under the direction of Tsoi/Kobus & Associates of Cambridge, MA, and Freeman, French, Freeman of Burlington, VT. Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal of Wheeling, WV, fabricated and installed the panels.

Searching for a perfect material to cover the roof and walls of the new Earl of Derby and Lord Sefton grandstands at historic Aintree racecourse in England, a British design firm put its money on Corus Building Systems' new Kalzip XT aluminum standing seam. The Building Design Partnership (BDP), used the 165'-long stucco-embossed aluminum panels to reach from the base of each structure to its peak, curving around the eaves as they made the transition from wall cladding to roof. The panels were designed using 3D CAD technology to ensure the correct twist as they followed the curvature of the gutters and fascia.

For its design of a new parking structure at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport, Pelli Clarke Pelli Architects wanted to use architectural metal mesh as an exterior cladding material. The challenge to find a product that provided the desired level of screening and the necessary amount of open area was met through the specification of a Facade mesh system from Cambridge Architectural of Cambridge, MD. The selected system features Cambridge's Scale pattern mesh attached in tension with custom Eclipse hardware. The Scale pattern features a 62% open area while providing the security, safety and visibility design team members wanted.

Architect Dave Richards admitted he “went nuts over the RHEINZINK Diamond Tiles” when he first saw them. Richards, president of Dave Richards Architects, Salt Lake City, was in the early stages of designing a new headquarters facility for his client, Chelated Minerals International of Salt Lake City. As luck would have it, the owners of Chelated Minerals happened to travel to Europe while Richards’ design recommendations were still being considered. After seeing numerous RHEINZINK applications in Germany, the owners were convinced. “‘It’s amazing’ they said,” according to Richards. “After that, the design was a done deal.”

Christina Crescent is the name given the project that saw a multi-parcel brownfield site along Wilmington, DE’s waterfront replaced by a 270,000 sq. ft., six-story office building and stand-alone five-story parking garage. The two structures are joined by a park plaza with a sunken garden spanned by a pedestrian bridge. Among the products utilized as part of the bridge's construction was galvanized steel grating from Ohio Gratings Inc. of Canton, OH. The chosen product features a close spacing pattern and below-surface anchor blocks, making it ideal for an office setting.

Counting barn restorations as one of its areas of specialization, Eight Hundred Roof of North Berwick, ME, fabricated and installed the 30,000 sq. ft. of metal roofing that now tops the Grafton Dairy Barn in North Haverhill, NH. Sheffield Metals of Sheffield Village, OH, manufactured the Slate Gray-colored, Kynar 500-coated, 24-gauge steel coils used to produce the roof panels. They were distributed by Admiral Building Products of Lewiston, ME.
