Sculpted to match the gentle slopes of a bordering wetlands preserve, the canopy of the new Arrendale Amphitheater at Piedmont College cuts a striking profile against the wilderness directly behind it. Considered the pièce de résistance of the college’s master plan for the arts, the new amphitheater was designed by Armentrout Roebuck Matheny Consulting Group of Athens, GA, and is clad on its underside with Reynobond® ACM from Alcoa Architectural Products.

The design of the new Cherokee Casino in West Siloam Springs, OK, is reminiscent of a time of rising nationalism from the 1780s to 1830s, prior to the Cherokee Nation’s removal from the southeast United States to Indian Country in present-day Oklahoma. More than 8,400 linear feet of Flex-C Trac® and Flex-C Angle from Flex-Ability Concepts were used to implement the radius-filled interior design of the hotel and casino facility.

An historic landmark, South Carolina State University’s Lowman Hall was reroofed in 2009 by Fort Roofing, Sumter, S.C. The architect for the project was Watson Tate Savory, Columbia, S.C., and the general contractor was Weber Construction Co., Orangeburg, S.C. The building was reroofed with 15,173 square feet of Techo Tile from ATAS International, Inc. The 0.032-inch aluminum tiles have a Redwood embossed finish.

Since being introduced more than a decade ago, Dri-Design dry-joint rainscreen metal wall panels have gained the attention of architects nationwide. Even heavyweight firms such as Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK), St. Louis have noticed the system’s combination of benefits–looks, performance and an “affordable” price. HOK specified 136,000 sq. ft. of Dri-Design panels for the exterior of the new Columbia St. Mary’s Hospital in Milwaukee.

St. Augustine Preparatory School in Richland, NJ, completed a building program recently that met the desired architectural character within the fixed schedule and budget. The $20-million, multi-purpose facility, dedicated as the Louis & Josephine Buondonno Forum, is the fourth major element in the campus infrastructure and creates a collegiate-like Quad on the 118-acre campus. The Forum features metal building systems from Butler Manufacturing.

The Alpha Flying (AFI) and Atlas Aircraft Center (APC) is a one-stop provider airport committed to servicing all its visitors' airport needs. For example, the full service spectrum facility offers general aviation uses such as aircraft storage, maintenance, repair and technical support. Located in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, the center houses a 40,000 square foot hangar (138’ wide x 286’ long) and a 44,000 square foot area for office space. The hangar utilizes 138’ clearspan straight column framing by Metallic Building Company.

Renowned for its mesh exteriors on newly constructed parking structures throughout the United States and Canada, Cambridge Architectural has developed its very first metal fabric system for an existing parking structure. Distinct segments of mesh dramatically and creatively bring elegant texture to the parking garage serving the Palliser South Professional Building and Office Tower in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Dow Building Solutions, a business unit of The Dow Chemical Company, and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) have taken the first step toward tackling a major environmental concern – the amount of energy consumed by the 4.8 million commercial buildings in the United States. Dow, ORNL and design-build firm Paramount Metal Systems have turned a 50-year-old ORNL building into a state-of-the art, energy-efficient research facility. The completed facility also features metal roofing and siding from Custom-Bilt Metals, along with retrofit framing from Roof Hugger.

With nearly 20,000 patients annually, the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine’s New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, PA, ranks as one of the busiest large animal teaching veterinary clinics in the nation. And medically speaking, the facility is also regarded as one of the country’s best...and getting better thanks to the recent construction of the new James M. Moran, Jr. Critical Care Center. The 18,540 sq. ft., 24-stall biosecure facility is topped with metal roofing manufactured from 24-gauge COOLR® steel coil supplied by Sheffield Metals International Inc.

As the Pittsburgh Penguins protect home ice at the city’s new hockey arena this winter of 2010-2011, they will be getting an assist from another hometown favorite, PPG Industries (NYSE: PPG). Two products from the Pittsburgh-based company’s protective and marine coatings (PMC) business - AQUAPON® water-based epoxy and PITT-GUARD® rapid-coat, direct-to-rust epoxy - were specified to protect the building’s structural steel from ultraviolet (UV) exposure, rust and other environmental hazards.

Appearance, durability and sustainability were all cited as reasons for the decision to utilize three types of metal roofing on the exteriors of eight building constructed as part of the new New York Thruway's Exit 17 interchange outside of Newburgh, NY. The systems were manufactured by Firestone Building Products Co., Indianapolis, IN, and installed by WB Roofing and Sheet Metal, Schenectady, NY.

The 2010 G-8 Summit was held in Huntsville, Ontario in the Muskoka Region of Canada. Muskoka is known for its sensitive landscape and pristine natural beauty. Building styling and material selection were highly scrutinized in an effort to harmonize with the surrounding picturesque environment. The entryway for the Canada Summit Centre has a heavy-timber look and required aesthetically-styled roofing. DECRA Roofing Systems’ DECRA Shingle in Canyon Brown blended well with the timber exterior.

The 6,000 square-foot Action Wildlife Museum is located in Goshen, Connecticut. The museum showcases taxidermy animals from throughout the world displayed in their natural settings, including two natural waterfalls. In back of the museum, there is a large covered pavilion with picnic tables for guests to use and enjoy. The project was created with metal systems from Metallic Building Company.

Alexan Cityview in Bayonne, NJ is a 544-unit apartment complex recently built on the site of an old federal shipbuilding and repair yard. In addition to being conveniently located and offering spectacular views of lower Manhattan, the property has a great clubhouse, complete with indoor and outdoor pools, game room and fitness center. Topping the 10,000 sq. ft., one-story building is an Englert metal roof system.

The new Indian Hills Elementary School in Independence, MO has been described as “one of the nicer looking elementary schools in the Kansas City area.” The 68,000 sq. ft. facility is part of the Fort Osage R-1 School District and was designed by DLR Group, Overland Park, KS. Included on its exterior are ProCore™ metal wall panels from Citadel Architectural Products.

At 43,500 sq. ft., the new John Deere store in Sauk Rapids, MN is big. And it’s a showplace of sorts, with an eye-catching 100’ x 160’ consumer display section and a retail counter that greets visitors with a colorful prairie scene that includes an old country barn and a depiction of the original 1-bottom plow that launched the John Deere machinery company in the mid 1800s. The building is clad with insulated metal wall panels from Kingspan and is equipped with a hydraulic door manufactured to specification by Schweiss Doors of Fairfax, MN.

Riverview Yacht Condos of Juneau, Alaska recently underwent re-roofing of two of their buildings. When metal roofing contractor Design North, Inc., also of Juneau, was given the latitude of coming up with different re-roofing solutions to prevent chronic leaking problems, their first thought was to use Roof Hugger Retrofit Systems.

Varco Pruden Buildings, a division of BlueScope Buildings North America, Inc., supplied Rigid Frame metal building systems for the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center – Emerging Growth Center facility in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The building utilized a complete Varco Pruden framing system. Special spaced spandrels and vertical members allowed for the use of concealed-fastened horizontal metal siding as well as the support for aluminum storefront and masonry effects.

This indoor water park was created within the confines of a newly erected Varco Pruden metal building. To maintain an interior temperature range of 80 to 84 degrees, even in the most frigid winter months, the building’s designer skinned the building with 60,000 sq. ft. of Metl-Span® insulated wall and roof panels. The 4” thick CFR-42 roof panels were finished in Cool Forest Green on the exterior and Polar White on the interior. The 3” thick CF-42 wall panels were finished in Terra Cotta on the exterior and Desert Beige on the interior.

From a sheet with nothing more than gridlines and conceptual elevations, grew one of Metallic Building Company’s most intricate projects to date. Metallic’s district sales manager, project managers, engineers and draftsmen worked tirelessly with the project architect and Drymalla Construction for nearly two years to develop the massive, state-of-the-art, George Ranch High School and Antoinette Reading Junior High School campus.
