Demand For Design Services Down In December, But Inquiries Into New Projects Remains Positive

Washington, DC – Demand for design services from U.S. architecture firms continued to contract in December, according to a new report from the American Institute of Architects (AIA). The pace of decline during December slowed from November, posting an Architecture Billings Index (ABI) score of 47.5 from 46.6 (any score below 50 indicates a decline in firm billings). Inquiries into new projects posted a positive score of 52.3, however new design contracts remained in negative territory with a score of 49.4.

Construction Material Costs Down Sharply In December, But AGC Survey Shows Contractors Wary

Arlington, VA - Plunging prices for diesel fuel, lumber, and steel cooled inflation for materials and services used in construction in December, but relief may be short-lived, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of newly released government data. Association officials noted that contractors listed material costs as one of their top concerns in a survey the association released this month.

Washington, DC – The Equipment Leasing & Finance Foundation has released its January 2023 Monthly Confidence Index (MCI-EFI) for the $1 trillion equipment finance industry. The index reports a qualitative assessment of both the prevailing business conditions and expectations for the future as reported by key executives from the $1 trillion equipment finance sector. January's index is 48.5, an increase from the December index of 45.9.

Construction Employment And Pay Rises In December

Arlington, VA - Construction firms added 28,000 employees in December and continued to raise wages for hourly workers more than other sectors as the industry’s unemployment rate fell to a record low for the month, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of new government data. Association officials said the data align with their newly released survey, which found the majority of contractors are optimistic about demand for most construction types, despite reporting difficulty filling positions.
